Our Homes Tell Our Stories

Shouldn't they reflect the lives we truly want to live?

Lately, I've been reflecting about the unique feeling a home holds. Beyond the style, decor and furniture, what is it that gives a space its soul? I believe it's the story it’s telling– the narrative of the lives being lived within it.

In my own home, the entryway is a testament to our daily activities. Muddy boots from school runs, backpacks waiting to be unpacked, and the latest LEGO masterpiece on display... in the shoe cabinet. Even the towels left on the bathroom floor are little flags of my boys' growing independence.

While I value a sense of order and simplicity, I'm learning to embrace the glorious chaos that comes with raising young children. It's a reminder that our home is alive, a living record of our family's experiences.

However, I'll be honest: clutter and disorder can often trigger a feeling of overwhelm, a sense that I'm losing control. Unfortunately, that’s just how I’m wired and I think many of you can relate in some way. I've found that implementing simple systems helps restore a sense of calm. Toys have designated spaces, and we've developed simple, practical evening routines that allow us to reset our space and wake up to a fresh start.

I think that true order isn't about a perfectly tidy home; it's about creating systems that bring us back to calm, even amidst the busyness of everyday life. Clutter and excess get in the way of this.

Our homes, and the belongings we fill them with, are reflections of who we are. Shouldn't they reflect the story we want to live? Shouldn't they bring us joy, rather than overwhelm?

I'm reminded of the profound simplicity of "Let there be light," where order and structure emerged from chaos. In our own lives, when we clear the clutter – both physical and mental – we create space for our true stories to unfold.

So, I invite you to reflect:

What story is your family living?

Does your home truly reflect that story?

Do you have the space, both physically and mentally, to embrace and enjoy the story you’re living?

If you're feeling a bit lost in the clutter, know that you're not the only one.

Here are a few practical steps you can take:

Reflect. Take a moment to define your family's values and the story you envision.

Start Small. Choose one manageable space and begin to eliminate excess, unused, redundant items.

Simplify. Look for ways to streamline daily routines and processes, letting go of activities or belongings that don't align with your ideal story.

Be Patient & Consistent. It’s an ongoing process, you’ll always be refining and adjusting as the seasons of your life shift.

Even small steps will start to reshape your mindset and can lead to significant changes. Trust your intuition; you know where to begin.
