Stop Comparing: Find YOUR organising style.

Comparison: The Thief of Joy

It's so easy to compare ourselves and our homes to others, to get caught up in the surface-level stuff, isn't it? The perfect pantry, the drawer dividers and styled shelves... but what's really the point of it all?

I've been asking myself, is it about impressing others? Comparing ourselves to others? Is it about control? Or is there something deeper, something more meaningful, that we're searching for?

I love having an organised and tidy home, but I have to check myself sometimes. What's my real reason for doing this? Do I want a perfectly organised home to impress people when they visit? Or is it about control? And then there's the question: what's the cost? Am I sacrificing time with my family in the pursuit of “perfect”? Am I allowing my kids to be kids and make a little mess?

I'll be honest, I often compare my own home to all those beautiful, organised and styled home photos online. Of course they inspire me. And yes, I do like inviting friends to a calm, organised home. But that's the surface-level side of organising. There's something more to it. I have to ask myself, "Why am I really doing this? Why does this matter to me?"

If we get caught up in superficial motivations, we risk losing sight of those unseen things, the things that really matter and hold eternal value. There are deeper reasons why an organised, decluttered home and a simpler life can bring us freedom and joy.

My True Motivation? Intentionality.

I want to create time and space to live intentionally.

I want to trade clutter, distractions & overwhelm for contentment & peace.

I want to love and serve God, my family, and others with purpose & meaning.

Finding Your Unique Motivation

If you're tired of thinking, 'My home will never look like that,' it's time to dig a little deeper. What would a calmer, more organised space truly mean to you?

Here's a practical way to discover your true motivation:

1. Name Your Values

What's truly important to you? Connection? Peace? Simplicity? Creativity?

2. Connect Your Values to Your Space

Consider how your home's organisation can reflect your values. For simplicity, that might be decluttering. For connection, a cozy conversation area. For peace & calm, maybe a ‘no-phone-zone’? For creativity, a dedicated project space.

3. Stay True to Yourself

Don't try to recreate an Instagram pantry or copy someone else's style. Infuse your own character and personality into your space. What reflects your unique tastes and preferences?

4. Make Small, Intentional Changes

Start with one small area and organise it with your values in mind. Notice how it feels. This will guide you in finding a natural, sustainable organising style that makes your home uniquely yours.

Here's to creating more space for what lasts, and less for what doesn't.
